Dressing for Men: No Aladdin Footwear

"Genie, for my first wish, I want a pony."

That's what I'm thinking when I see some men's shoes out there.

First problem:

The toe is too long and narrow. Obviously no man's toes are reaching all the way to the end, so there is added on a ridiculous amount of extra, unnecessary shoe.

Second problem:

See how the toe turns upward? Upturned toes are not allowed, in general. Any shoe I try on with a curled toe does not get bought. The human toe does not naturally point upward, so the shoe should reflect that.

Because then you are the Genie without Robin William's wit.

One of the basics of clothing is: attire must make the wearer look thinner and daintier than they are in real life. A man's (or woman's) foot should not look as though it is encased in a scuba fin.

Ill add to this that when wearing a suit one should wear either cap-toe or wingtips. Furthermore, every man should own a high quality shoe shine kit and know how to use it. I cant tell you how many patients surreptitiously check out my shoes when I walk in to the examining room.

It makes a BIG difference; how can one trust their medical professional if his shoes aren't taken care of?

And that's a yes for cap-toes or wingtips! Seriously, when did it get to be so much work to lace up a shoe?

I haven't the foggiest idea when it got to be so difficult. It has over the years earned me the amusing nickname the old man since I'm probably one of the few folks under 30 who wears this sort of thing. And lets not even get started on making sure that dress shirts are pressed.

Shirts are left unpressed . . .?

I need some mourning time.

I disagree that one needs to wear wing-tips or cap toes with a suit. It depends on the style the wearer is aiming for. As someone who prefers a sleek and chic style when dressing up, I look for clean lines. A shoe with a rounded cap toe would definitely break the vertical line. Perhaps something with a more pointed toe would work with a cap toe.

PL - great blog!

I have to be honest thought, ballet flats are just as bad at the Aladdin style loafer. Can't frum women find something better? Please!

Adam: You cannot diss the ballet flat. Of course, not all flats are created alike.

Try being tall in high school. Back then, the only flats were dorky semi-loafers. Ballet flats gave me back my confidence - I never wear heels.

There is no way to improve upon it. Some companies will have the toe curl upwards, but that is what one has to look out for.

No, no more pointed toes! That is the whole point (pun intended?) of this post - that men are walking around in ridiculously long and pointed shoes. There is a balance in between.

A men's shoe shouldn't be square, shouldn't be too round, shouldn't be too pointy; it should fall somewhere between all these.

You never wear heels? Being tall is not an excuse...

Sorry, but the frum world has gone a.s. crazy over the ballet flats. They've overdone.

Now when I mentioned pointed, I should have used the word tapered. Not square/round/pointed, but somewhere in between. My Mezlans and KCs have that more modern vibe.

Um, yes, being tall is an excuse! I'd rather not tower over the crowd like a science experiment gone bad.

Kitten heels are gross, and while, yes, the frummies have gone overboard with the flats, I always make sure mine have a funky vibe.

Towering!? Unless you're over 6'2", I wouldn't say you're towering. Sprouting maybe, short of breath possibly, hypoxically tall perhaps, but not towering. To be called towering birds would have to use you for a roost.

Science experiment gone bad? Oh no, I can just imagine imitation lava flowing. Stop it, will you!?

Princess Lea said...

If I would put on heels, then yes, I would be 6'2". In any case, recent research shows that wearing heels destroys the body.

Those shoes are really funny.

I did do a post on how men sabotage their first dates and one of the things I mentioned was footwear.

Most unpopular with women:

Crocs
flip flops (unless you're at the beach)
beat up tennis shoes
and now I have the Genie show.

It hurts so much to watch guys on the street, especially when they wear these shoes with skin-tight pants. It makes them look like a cartoon character.
