I didn't need to do formal background checks during my brief online dating experience: even at the emailing stage, before we actually went on a date, I discovered that my sister knew one of the women I dated (actually knew her brother more) from her youth movement and that the other woman I dated was my sister's flatmate's best friend (!) and also the cousin of someone I was at university with.
